There are two words to describe our day at Bentwater, “Top Quality”. Bentwater is one of the finest conditioned courses we have played at in years. The grass was like carpet and the greens were fast and true. When you pulled into the parking lot, a bag boy was waiting in a cart to take you and your clubs to your assigned cart. The staff was always checking to make sure everyone was enjoying themselves. And the cart girls seemed to be around every couple holes. Even the couple showers that passed through during our round did not dampen the enthusiasm everyone had for the course. Everyone enjoyed themselves so much, we will be looking to return towards the end of season.
Nineteen golfers took a chance on the weather and traveled North East to Royal Lakes Golf course in Flowery Branch. They were reworded by the Golf Gods because it stopped raining just before we teed of. The sun even came out! We found it to be a challenging but fun course. We have played it before and were glad we returned. The evening was closed out with some good food and drink at Crossroads Bar and Grill.
Country Club of Gwinnett was a new venue for ASGA and most of the players asked to go back and play this course again. Even with the typical Atlanta weekend showers, we got in 18 holes of golf, followed by burgers on the patio. The four par-3 holes on the course provided some interesting challenges, but our members were up to it and the winners took home some gas money. Two of our members battled it out for closest to the pin on hole #16, but the challengers agreed to a tie and split the prize. If you missed this one, you missed a great event!
Like all events we have scheduled over the past couple of months, rain threatened. But unlike other events, it cleared out prior to our tee time and turned out to be perfect weather for golf. The course was dry and in very good condition considering the drought. Unfortunately the games of the fourteen golfers were not in as good of condition as the course. The two awards for the two contest holes had to be given out by drawing as no one found the green on the closest to the pin holes. We know that will change as everyone sharpens their game.
Our first golf event of the official ASGA golf season was a non-golf event for the majority of the participants. However, an extremely delicious lunch of hand smoked BBQ pork, potato salad, pork & beans and potato chips was enjoyed by all in the club house while we were getting acquainted with new members and re-acquainted with returning members. A few of our participants did brave the very wet and dreary weather conditions and a soggy golf course to play either 18 or 9 holes of golf. This was a rare opportunity on a golf course for those choosing to play where you could actually sit down and eat your lunch at the turn and then return to the course without losing the tee box. For those who chose not to play golf the pro shop very willingly provided rain checks due to the wet conditions. Our closest to the pins and door prizes were selected in a random drawing of all paid participants.
