Looking Back

The good news is the rain did not materialize, in spite of the 70-80% forecast!! I wish I could say something positive about the greens … unfortunately these were in horrible shape. I realize many of the courses have struggled with their greens this year, but luckily this was the first time I experienced them. I did not hear complaints from the players, so I am assuming everyone understood the challenges the course has been dealing with and made the most of a ‘less than desirable’ situation. The rough was quite thick, and even the fairways were more lush than we are used to playing. This meant you really needed to hit the ball in the air, as worm-burners were not rewarded with much distance!! All but two of our group of 16 players relaxed over drinks and dinner at O’Charley’s.

What a surprise … another ghastly hot and humid summer day in Atlanta!!! The rain showers late in the round were actually a welcome relief, as they temporarily lowered the temperature. But of course then it became even more muggy and sticky! At least my team only had three holes remaining. We had a terrific group of 25 players, including two ‘alumni’ or past members of ASGA (Dave Graybeal and Steve White). Hopefully we will see both of these men at future events. I have to admit I was shocked there were no cancellations due to the weather. The course was in excellent shape, so those who played had a preview of this year’s Club Championship course. We relaxed over drinks and dinner at Ruby Tuesday, and thoroughly enjoyed the air conditioning.

Heritage Golf LInks
July 24, 2010
Event Leader: Micki Graham

Will the REAL golfers please stand up! There were 25 of us who decided golf was important enough for us to play in 96 degree temperatures. Although the sun was in and out and there was a breeze at times, we’re not going to tell you that it was not hot, but the heat didn’t seem to deter us from having a good time and enjoying a different, quite unique golf course at Heritage Golf Links. AND…..we did not find any golfers on the side of the cart path passed out from heat exhaustion. We had a tremendous turn-out for the get-together after golf (23 folks) and we could see lots of margaritas and cold beer on the table, along with some good food. In addition to 5 golf prizes, we had a “Courage Award” presented at the after golf dinner. It was a drawing for the golfers who had the courage to show up in the heat! Our Prez, Greg Bolan, drew the winning name and the winner was Ken Jaye. Thanks to everyone for making this a great golf outing!

Tubing Down the Chattahoochee

Event Leader: Pat Farris

Those of you who did not join our tubing adventure really missed an interesting Sunday afternoon. Our trip was storm delayed by 1 1/2 hours. After the storm passed we were taken to Buford Dam and ventured into the river with our tubes and paddles.  Because of the storm and the really cold river water (45 degrees), the river was completely covered with fog.  We thought we were in some kind of horror movie.  We all had a great time even though some of us (me) had very sore arms Monday morning.

After changing into dry clothes we all enjoyed a relaxing dinner at Frontera Mexican Grill.

The forecast called for only a 50% chance of rain. Unfortunately it was wrong, because the rain came down in buckets and delayed our start by about 45 minutes. Even after we teed off, the rain kept coming down for several holes. This coupled with some real SLOOOOOOW play from a large group in front of us made for a very long day and a 6 plus hour round of golf. Being the resilient group that we are, we made the most of a bad situation and enjoyed the company we were with. Marc Gober had the best day of any of us with a hole in one on a long par three. Unfortunately for Marc he got the hole in one on one of the holes which was closest to the pin for the ladies in the group. Since it was so late when we finished (830 PM), only a few went to dinner and enjoyed the round of drinks that Marc so generously paid for. Congratulations to him on his hole in one.

Sugar Hill Golf Club
July 10, 2010
Event Leader: Pat Farris

We had 12 members and 2 guests playing Sugar Hill Golf Club Saturday, July 10. The weather was absolutely beautiful and the course was in excellent condition. Strange as it may seem for July it was not too hot....we had a nice breeze all day. After golf we all came back to my house for BBQ and then a relaxing boat ride around the lake.

Our guests were Mary Dow and Michelle Baker.  Mary has joined our group and Michelle will be joining.  We’re glad you came to our outing and hope to see both of you soon.

Canyon Ridge
July 3-5, 2010
Event Leader: John Angelo

Over the fourth of July weekend 18 members of our group went back to the mountains of northwest Georgia to enjoy one of the most challenging courses we play all year. From the first hole with its majestic view of valley below to the last hole with another valley view, this course plays through some of the most beautiful scenic terrain in all of Georgia.

The highlight of the first day was a hole in one by Craig Bovenizer on the third hole. Playing to about 100 yards, his ball bounced off the side of the hill on the right side of the green, rolled onto the green, and headed for the hole. Not the prettiest hole in one ever witnessed, BUT, it is still a hole in one and congratulations go out to him.

The highlight of the second day was Crash Lillyan, who tried to see how many times she could bounce when she fell out of the golf cart she was driving. It’s OK to laugh now, but at the time, I was about 100 feet from her when it happened. I saw her flying through the air......the golf cart took a right turn and tried to go up the side of the mountain......she landed to the left of the cart path......knocked out cold. I ran to her as fast as I could and tried to communicate with her, but she was not responding. To say I was scared would be an understatement. For Lillyan, the real scary part was when she came too; there I was about 18 inches from her face asking her if she was all right. Someone was watching out for her that day because after getting back to Atlanta she did see a doctor. Besides bumps, bruises, and scrapes....and the painful memory of me being in her face, she is OK. Lillyan did not finish playing that hole, however, like a true dedicated golfer, she teed off at the next hole and finished the round.

That evening we celebrated the birthday of our nation (and Lillyan being OK) with a Fourth of July barbecue at the cottage of the event leader. Dick Wilhelm once again took to the grill and cooked some of the best chicken and burgers you'd ever want to taste. Kudos to him and his secret barbecue sauce for another great job of cooking.

Monday came all too soon and after a final round of golf by most of the group we all realized that we had to once again leave one of the most beautiful areas of Georgia and go back to world of pavement and high-rises. Not to worry........next year we will return. (FYI: the decision has already been made that Lillyan will not be allowed to drive the cart).

Hamilton Mill
June 20, 2010
Event Leaders: Mark Lesser and Toni McCormick

A hearty group of golfers joined together on Father’s Day to play Hamilton Mill Golf Club. The day was a typical hot and humid Georgia summer afternoon. After the links the group headed over to the Arena Tavern for some friendship, food, beverages and finished watching the US Open golf tournament on TV. Thanks to all who came out for making this a big success.

Collins Hill Golf Club
June 12, 2010
Event Leader: Pat Farris

It was an interesting day for the 9 golfers who decided to play Collins Hill golf course. It was HOT, HOT AND HOT, half the greens were closed, the fairways were not great but despite it all I think we had a fun day. Seven went for Mexican after golf and then on to my house for several hours on the lake (mostly to cool off) and then back to my house for dessert (had to do something to make up for the condition of the course).

Reunion Golf Club
June 5, 2010
Event Leader: Melanie Spamer

Even though summer has not officially arrived, it certainly felt like it for the 18 members who played golf at Reunion. The humidity was oppressive at times … the only relief was the occasional wind or cloud cover. I wish it had rained, at least for a short period of time, to somewhat cool us off! This course is enough of a challenge, especially for the men, but then we were confronted with ‘cart-path only’ conditions as well. I can honestly say we were a sight for sore eyes as 14 of us relaxed over drinks and dinner at Jeffrey’s Sports Grill. The air conditioning was absolutely fantastic, to put it mildly!!

I want to personally welcome Linda Beahn to the Atlanta Singles golf group. She recently moved here from the south Florida area. We look forward to seeing you at future ASGA golf events.
